If overseas travel is even a small possibility over the next couple of years, now is the time to check your passport expiry date. A quiet change made nearly a decade ago is about to catch up with millions of New Zealanders and it could lead to long queues and last-minute stress if ignored.
Back in November 2015, New Zealand passports shifted from a five-year validity to ten years. At the time, it felt like a win. Fewer renewals, less paperwork and more freedom to travel. Fast forward to today and those same passports are now approaching their expiry date.
According to Brooke van Velden, the next two years will see an unprecedented spike in passport renewals. Anyone who renewed their passport in 2015 or 2016 is now firmly in the danger zone.
Why 2026 And 2027 Will Be Extremely Busy
The Department of Internal Affairs is already preparing for what it describes as a major surge in applications. The numbers tell the story clearly:
More than 1.3 million passports will expire over the next two years
In 2026, around 622,000 renewal applications are expected
In 2027, a further 759,000 passports are set to expire
That means hundreds of thousands of people will be trying to renew at the same time. If your passport expires in 2026, you will be competing with over half a million others.

Good News On Processing Times
There is a bright side. Passport services have improved significantly. Processing times have dropped dramatically, from around 25 days in 2023 to just 3 days on average today. This applies to all applications, not only urgent ones. However, those fast turnaround times rely on manageable demand. Once the anniversary rush begins, delays are far more likely.
Renew Early And Travel With Peace Of Mind
The advice is simple: do not wait. If your passport is going to expire in 2026, applying for renewal right now could save you a lot of unnecessary stress and preparation later. Unaware of an expiring passport can disrupt holidays, family visits, study plans and work travel, usually at the worst possible moment.
Renewing is straightforward. Most people can complete the process online quickly and securely at passport.govt.nz, without visiting an office.
A quick check today could make the difference between a smooth journey and a missed flight tomorrow.
