Travelling to New Zealand just got easier, faster and smarter, thanks to the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority otherwise known as NZeTA.

If you are planning on flying in, maybe join a cruise or even be part of a crew, the NZeTA helps make your journey smoother while keeping in mind safety and security.

The NZeTA was launched in August 2019 to make travel simpler for visitors who do not need a visa. It is basically a digital travel authorisation that connects convenience with strong border protection. Since it has been introduced, over 6.6 million NZeTAs have been approved, including 1.6 million in the 2024/2025 financial year alone.

It’s a move that keeps New Zealand’s border processes aligned with international best practice while welcoming millions of travellers each year.

Who Needs an NZeTA?

Most visitors from visa-waiver countries need an NZeTA before arriving by air, cruise or cargo ship.

Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport do not need one. Australian residents, however, do require an NZeTA.

As part of a 12-month trial, Chinese and Pacific Islands Forum passport holders can now travel from Australia to New Zealand visa-free for up to three months with an NZeTA — a great boost for travel and tourism.
