Ukraine Resident Visa Closing in March 2026: What Applicants Need to Know

The Ukraine Resident Visa category will close to new applications on 16 March 2026. This date is important for anyone in New Zealand who holds a Special Ukraine Visa and wishes to stay in the country permanently.

After 16 March 2026, applications under this visa category will no longer be accepted under current immigration rules. For many Ukrainians who arrived during a time of conflict, this pathway offers a chance to build a stable and secure future in New Zealand. Immigration authorities are strongly advising eligible people to apply as early as possible.

Anyone who wants to remain in New Zealand permanently must submit a Ukraine Resident Visa application on or before 16 March 2026. Applications sent after this date cannot be accepted.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, the main applicant must have arrived in New Zealand on a 2022 Special Ukraine Visa on or before 15 March 2024.

The applicant can include:

  • A partner and

  • Dependent children

in the same residence application.

All applicants must:

  • Meet standard character and identity checks and

  • Provide a Limited Medical Certificate and a chest X-ray certificate.

  • There is no English language test required for this visa.

Staying in New Zealand during the Wait

Residence applications sometimes may take time to be processed. And to make sure people stay within the law, those already present in New Zealand on a Special Ukraine Visa can apply for another Special Ukraine Visa while waiting for a decision on their residence application.

This allows applicants to remain in New Zealand without interruption and continue their daily lives while their application is being considered.

Why Acting Early Matters

The closing date of 16 March 2026 is fixed. Once the category closes, late applications will not be accepted. For many families, this is the main opportunity to gain permanent residence. Applying early gives people the time to:

  • Collect and keep medical and supporting documents,

  • Deal with any delays

  • And mainly avoid the risk of missing any deadline. For those who are prepared and have met the requirements, the visa gives out a clear path to a long-term future in New Zealand.

The opportunity is very limited therefore early action is essential.
