The Minister highlighted that 76 per cent of Northlanders receiving Jobseeker Support for less than a year already have past work experience. With MSD’s support, many of them are being connected with the right employers and matched with jobs that suit their skills.
The Whangārei event was the fifth in a series of gatherings across New Zealand. These events are all about bringing employers and MSD teams together to share insights, talk openly about workforce needs, and find solutions to regional employment challenges.
“These are opportunities for local employers and organisations to discuss how we can all work together to understand workforce needs and address workforce challenges,” Minister Upston added.
The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is working closely with Northland businesses to help local people find meaningful work. A recent Into Work event in Whangārei brought employers together with Minister of Social Development and Employment Louise Upston to share real success stories about filling roles with local talent.
A good example would be Fulton Hogan, who have teamed up with MSD in order to train and employ 44 people from that particular region. These candidates take part in a structured learning programme designed to give them the skills and knowledge required to thrive in their chosen or specialised careers.
“Fulton Hogan are among those providing opportunities for job seekers, placing more people in Northland than anywhere else in the country,” Minister Upston said.

It’s clear that with strong partnerships between businesses and government, Northland job seekers are being given real chances to step into long-term, rewarding work.
