Graduated from These Tamil Nadu Institutions? You’re Eligible for a 2-Year Direct Work Visa in Australia!

Updated: Apr 14, 2025

The Australian government has introduced a new work visa scheme called the MATES Program (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-Professionals Scheme). This program is specifically designed to help young Indian professionals who graduated recently to gain work experience in Australia for up to two years.

The initiative began in December 2024, and each year, 3,000 slots will be made available for Indian applicants through a lottery system. This is a fair way to select candidates. The program even allows participants to bring their families to Australia. Family members, like a spouse or children, can apply as dependents. They don’t have to go through the lottery process and are allowed to work freely in Australia.

This program is part of Australia’s effort to strengthen ties with India by giving young professionals opportunities to work in industries where their skills are in demand. These industries include renewable energy, engineering, technology, artificial intelligence, financial technology, agriculture, and mining. It’s also a great opportunity for participants to grow in their careers while contributing to Australia’s economy.

Who Can Apply for MATES Program?

To qualify for this visa, candidates need to meet several conditions:

  1. Age Limit: Must be between 18 and 30 years old.

  2. Citizenship: Must hold a valid Indian passport.

  3. Educational Background: Must have studied at one of the top approved universities or institutions in India.

  4. Language Skills: Must score well in English language tests like IELTS or TOEFL.

  5. New Participants Only: You cannot apply if you’ve already held this specific visa before.

  6. Lottery System: Applications must be submitted through a registration ballot system before the formal visa application.

Why Tamil Nadu Stands Out in the MATES Program?

Out of the 100 institutions approved for Australia’s MATES program, Tamil Nadu leads as the top state with the highest number of qualifying institutions—18 in total. This impressive representation includes renowned institutions like IIT Madras, Anna University, and several other premier colleges known for excellence in engineering, technology, and medical education. Tamil Nadu’s prominence on this list underscores its contribution to producing highly skilled professionals and providing its graduates with valuable opportunities to gain global work experience through this esteemed program.
