“A Place That Changed Me”, Sanjiev Shares His Story of Studying in New Zealand

We reached out to Sanjiev SH, a student currently studying in New Zealand at the University of Waikato, where he is pursuing his Master’s in Business and Management. He gave us an open and thoughtful look into his experience, not just about education, but personal growth, daily life, and what he now calls his second home.

When I decided to leave home and pursue my Master’s in Business and Management in New Zealand, I knew I was stepping into a new chapter. But I never expected just how deeply this journey would change me, beyond just academics or career.

The Difference This Journey Made in Me

This experience has truly transformed me, both emotionally and professionally.

On a personal level, I’ve become emotionally stronger. There were moments of loneliness and uncertainty, but they taught me how to stand on my own. I’ve become more self-aware, more in tune with what’s happening around me, how I react to situations, and how to take responsibility for myself. I’ve matured a lot during this time, and that growth is something I’m really proud of.

I also picked up essential life skills that are part of the daily rhythm here in NZ, things like cooking, managing my finances, balancing study with part-time work, and, most importantly, time management. These might sound basic, but they’ve had a huge impact on how I approach life now.

One of the biggest blessings has been the close circle of friends I’ve built here. They’ve become my family away from home. We share our ups and downs, celebrate wins, and support each other when things get tough. I often turn to them for advice and encouragement and that emotional connection keeps me grounded.

Professionally, Studying in New Zealand has helped me work in various environments, across cultures, industries, and team settings. I've become more adaptable, collaborative, and confident in handling both structured and unpredictable situations. Every assignment, project, and part-time job has helped shape the person I am today.

Thoughts on New Zealand, The Country and Culture

New Zealand has a special charm. There’s a calmness here that I’ve come to appreciate deeply. The people are kind, the lifestyle is balanced, and the culture is incredibly inclusive. I really admire the Kiwi way of life, respect for people, nature, and time.

After spending this much time in New Zealand, I can genuinely say it feels like a second home. The people here are warm, respectful, and inclusive, and the sense of community is something I truly admire. The culture promotes balance between work and life, nature and progress, tradition and innovation.

What stands out to me most is the Kiwi spirit, grounded, humble, and always willing to help. Whether it’s lecturers who go the extra mile or classmates who support each other, the environment here fosters kindness and collaboration. The natural beauty, from the beaches to the mountains, also makes it easy to find moments of peace and inspiration.

This is a place that gives you space to breathe and grow. Whether it’s having a quiet moment in nature or a meaningful conversation with a stranger, there’s something comforting about how life moves here, at its own peaceful pace.

My Future Plans in NZ

Looking ahead, if all goes well, I see myself continuing my journey here in New Zealand to explore more about myself and what I am capable of. My goal is to build a career in business strategy and consulting, where I can help businesses grow, adapt, and solve real-world challenges. I’m particularly drawn to working with startups and firms that value creative thinking, data-driven strategies, and making a real difference.

The business landscape in NZ is exciting, there’s innovation, openness to new ideas, and a genuine interest in sustainable growth. I want to be a part of that ecosystem, contribute meaningfully, and keep learning along the way.

At the end of the day, this journey isn’t just about getting a degree, it’s about becoming the kind of person I always wanted to be. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.
