A New Specialist School for Autistic Students Opens in 2026

For some young learners in school a traditional classroom setting can be a difficult or overwhelming place to learn. This is often true for autistic and neurodivergent students. Taking note of this, there will be a new school in New Zealand designed just for them. This school will offer a different way of learning that focuses on each student's unique strengths and needs. The government recently has announced that the Autism NZ Education Hub will open in Term 3 of 2026. It will be set up as a charter school, which means there is more freedom to customise their own teaching methods.

Associate Education Minister David Seymour said the new hub shows how charter schools can create new options for families. He stated, “Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow in ways which are more specific to their needs.”

The school will be run by Autism NZ and will have campuses in both Wellington and Auckland. It is for secondary school students who have found mainstream schooling challenging.

The way students learn at the hub will be very personal. Each student will have a plan built around their own interests, strengths and what they need help with. The school will balance normal lessons with important life skills and social-emotional learning.

The main goal is to help students get back to benefiting from in-class education. The hub will use online and community-based learning as steps to help students transition back into face-to-face learning in a classroom. There is a clear need for this kind of school. It is estimated that there are at least 3,900 autistic students in Years 9-13 in Auckland and Wellington alone. National data shows that neurodivergent students often have very high rates of absence from school. Dane Dougan, the Chief Executive of Autism NZ, said,

"Providing more education options for whānau is essential... The Autism New Zealand Education Hub represents a meaningful step forward for autistic learners and their families."

This new hub is one of several new charter schools opening in 2026. It will bring the total number of charter schools in New Zealand to 17. The government expects to announce even more new charter schools and the first state schools to convert to charters, before the end of the year.
